Working on a linocut for a friend who's into Russian literature. Subject of choice: hunting stories of Toergenew. The lino is a bit of a challenge, since I've only made one linocut before. The book I've been reading features a lot of woodcuts, which add to the stories' somewhat antique, rural feeling. And I've been meaning to do some linocuts for a while now, so the decision was quickly made. I'm going for more a comicbook approach though. Think 'Mike Mignola', in stead of 'Albrecht Dürer'.

Bookdesign: Luchtlijnen part1

As some have noticed, it's been rather quiet here lately. But worry not, there is more to come.
Starting off, this cover-concept for a book written by my uncle Jeroen. It's a book of songs/poetry, with the guiding theme of 'lines in the sky and through the air'. Meaning the fading traces left by airplanes as they pass by, and going furter, the act of 'writing in the air' AKA forming ideas in your head before commiting them to paper and making them tangible. A nice example would be the artist Panamarenko, who thinks of these magnificent flying objects (again the link with the airplane) but when the theory is put to practice, the results aren't quite the same.
The final cover will probably be watercolor, to accentuate the fading and intangible aspect of it all.
Later this week a comic on safety, followed by at least a week of me being on vacation (and staying away from the interwobble). After wich I shall bring back sketches and/or pictures from Dublin, Ireland.

Description: The format is that of a classic newspaper strip. Black and white line-art in the week, and a bigger colored one on Sundays. But don't be fooled, this isn't Garfield. We follow the daily lives of kid genius (and billionaire) Sheldon, his talking duck Arthur, energetic dog Osso, Flaco the lizard and a grumpy grandfather.
Recurring themes include the hillarious (yet right-on-target) analysis of common events, Arthur's crush on Shakira and Grampa's coffee addiction.
For everybody who loves Calvin and Hobbes and Peanuts (or just Snoopy, as we call the strips around here).

Description: Full-color comic. A rollercoaster of wacky adventures and mysterious mysteries, featuring sassy girls and handsome lads. It's an adventure comic with a unique blend of nutty, brittish tongue-in-cheek and supernatural mystery.
Fun fact: John likes to switch things up every couple of years. The comic started out all vector-based, went to hand-drawn, back to vectors and is now back to hand-drawn again. And it never lost it's appeal.

Updates: The comic runs in chapters, with a new page added every weekday. Never known him to miss an update.

Welcome, one and all, to the first post in a (hopefully) long line of articles about … webcomics. Fact of the matter is, I love webcomics. I don't have to get out the door to read them, they're cheap and there's dozens of them on every subject matter or for every moodswing. Try finding that in print, I dare you. (I still buy lots of printed comics though. I love the feeling of ownership and being able to flip through pages manually) Downside is the over-abundance. You just have to know where to find the good ones. And that comes with going through a lot of crappy ones. (Which I like just as well.) Luckily, I'm here with my rough guide to the Great Ones.

This is actually one of the first webcomics I started reading.

About: It chronicles the bizarre life of 3 roommates who look surprisingly similar to author Neil Gaiman, director Tim Burton and singer Robert Smith (the Cure). Guest-appearances by Andrew (Sisters of Mercy). A mix of gothy spookyness, dark humour and allround bizarre situations. A must-read for fans of any of the above.

I'm at version number 5, I believe, and that's quite enough for a while now. To make updating easier, I finally managed to put a Content Management System in the backend. Ah, Wordpress, how versatile you are. So, I still have to put up the 'graphic design'-part of the portfolio, but all the rest is up now. Go see for yourselves.

It's still a bit broken in IE6 & in IE7. Since I don't run Windows on my Mac, I have to check that stuff at work. So I'll get to it when I get around to it.

Frankfurt

A couple of sketches made in Frankfurt's Museum of Natural History, one of the 3 musea I visited there. That alone was worth the 8 hour (!!!) busdrive. Of course I saw much more. Did the English Theatre, saw an exhibition about female impressionists, one about painters from the 16th century to the 19th, works of Picasso, … Everything I could absorb in a little over 2 days. Walked the city for hours on end, standing still at just about every interesting place. A big thanks to Pieter for the tour.

As I posted a couple months ago, I translated a couple of pages of their brandnew comic 'Contraband', for use as a sample for Dutch & Flemish publishers. The first print-issue of the original is coming out through SlaveLabor Graphics in Februari and the digital version premiered on SLG's Eyemelt.com. It's awesome, so check it out!

Embee sculpture

About 4 or 5 years ago, I started drawing little creatures in jars. Mostly an embryonic type of alien. There's something so fascinating about the evolution an organisme goes through before emerging as a 'finished product'. A human being, from conception to birth, will look like it's following the evolution of it's entire species. That fascination, and the sci-fi geek inside of me, led me to sculpting a prototype for what I'm working on now. Following the drawings, I made a little blue alien in a jar that's been sitting on my dresser for years. (yeah, I need to make some room for all the junk I've been making.) It's been waiting for me to finally start on a series of creatures combining my love for biology and sci-fi.
The excuse for it, came in the form of a friend who noticed the little blue guy (or girl) and commenting on it. So when her birthday came up, I decided to make her a copy. (You know, to get warmed up for sculpting again. Not that I'm so cheap that I won't buy anyone a present. Seriously.)
Well, in the pictures below you can see how that turned out. And I can tell you, it's going in a different direction than I thought it would go. Which is a great thing. I like the way the sculpting is going, so I'm keeping this one for now. Sorry E., but you can have the original one. I'm going to miss the little critter but I'm sure you'll take good care of it.

Sketch, jar and the basis for the sculpture

Twisted wire and general shape made from miliput, a polymer. Mix the 2 parts, make any shape with it, and it hardens withing a couple of hours.

Supersculpey for the actual sculpting. Tried smoothing the surface a bit with a small brush and some desolvant.

This is the sculpture with added wire (for the chord) and after baking it. Needs a bit of sanding and it's ready for the jar. (wouldn't be necessairy if I had put more work into smoothing it before baking.)

Voilà, the final result. looks a little creepier then I originally intended for it. I'll be experimenting more with adding objects and wire to the next sculpture.

My first moleskine

I've used many types sketchbooks before, but never found just what I needed. Made me want to make some myself (which I've done a couple of times). Recently however, I read a lot about these 'legendary' little black books known als Moleskines. After some digging, I found a place where they sold them and decided to try one out. Now, it's not the perfect sketchbook, but it comes pretty damn close to it. Too bad they're so expensive (cheapest I found was 11 euros for a small one).
Anyways, as a test-run, I took it with me on my trip to Wales a couple of weeks ago. These are some of the results. Sorry for the poor quality of the photos (yeah, I said photos, not the drawings). Didn't feel like scanning and retouching.

Something I forgot to mention a couple of weeks ago: writer TJ Behe from the comic 'Contraband' asked me to translate a couple of pages as a sample for Dutch/Flemish publishers. It recently got picked up by US publisher Slave Labor Graphics and now they're hoping to take over the rest of the world as well. It used to be called 'Mobile Pornography' but they changed the name (probably because they didn't want publishers to get the wrong idea).
Well, the translation was a bit of a challenge and although it probably isn't perfect, I learned a lot from it. So, who knows, if you come across some sample pages from the comic, you might spot my name.
The US comic is due Februari next but until then, you can check out a 6 page preview right here.

I'm working on a t-shirt design for some friends' band. Same guys I did a website for. (check it) They wanted a cartoon but I didn't find a lot of time to do it in (you know, with actual *payed* work and "I don't wanna"). So last week one of them sent me a nice concept-sketch. It's a manual for the fans to do their patented (not really) move at gigs. Funny thing for a rockband to have. Not sure who to credit for it but I love the idea.
So this is my interpretation of it.

This is a painting I made for a friend of mine. Took me a while to get started on it but even longer to actually finish it. Guess I'm a bit out of the whole painting-thing. To be honest, I never got into it in the first place. I know, it brings shame to the name (hehehe) but I always prefered sketching, ink and pencils to paint and brushes. When I do get painting, it's often a difficult and frustrating journey. Come to think of it, in the end, I'm always glad I took it. Makes me think I should do it more. Not that I'm a massochist, but I find it a great learning-experience to do something that doesn't seem to fit you artistically. A rather well-known sculptor (I forget who it was), once said that he emersed himself in sculpting just because it was the discipline that was most difficult for him. He just didn't have the same 'feeling' for it then for drawing.
On that note, I quite enjoy sculpting myself so I'll try to get a few new things done to put online.

As I sit here working (yet again) on my website-redesign, I get the sinking sensation that I've lost touch with half the world out there.
Seriously, apologies to the ones I've been ignoring these past few months. I've got some plans that I need to see through before I can get on with life and the creative part of my brain. With any luck I'll have a new site up and running in June (with an online store), a regular update schedule for my webcomic, begin writing a new comic, do some sculpting, and so on. Come to think of it, that doesn't leave much time for getting out of the house but I'll make it work. At least I'll come and see some of you graduate, help you move into a new house, go get a drink before those 9 months are over, or just hand over that painting I've been promising for 3 months.

One of my uncle Jeroen's yearly traditions, is sending out home-made Christmas cards. Ok, sounds corny as hell, but bear with me. He's quite the creative mind, and a poet, so they're always special. Almost Halloween, so here's one about the wolfman. Werewolves, my favorite movie-creatures. Sure, they're hard to groom and have perticular tastes in food but you're sure to have a burglar-free home. I made a spelling error with the album title, it seems. Thanks to Ivo for pointing that out to me, I'll fix it this weekend. And I'll be making some more tweaks to this design. Also, I'm expanding the concept. Coming soon: a myspace music profile for the band (complete with music: thanks again Ivo!) and probably a bit of merch as well.

So, I've been working on art & design for the debut-album of upcoming rockband Dashwood. It's quite a challenge, seeing as the band doesn't really exist. It was an idea given to me by a buddy of mine. He pointed out that album design isn't really represented in my portfolio, so I should make some. Ivo brought the name and the music style, I'm doing the rest. Here's a few pencil sketches. I'm going for pretty but dangerous. It's going to be a mix of plantlife, hair, insects & how things aren't always what they appear to be at first sight. The passive and the agressive, mimicry, that sort of thing. Lot's of work to do still. Ink, textures, colour, maybe a bit of photography even. We'll see where it goes. For now, enjoy the pencilwork.

I got started on my 'Stitchdolls' last week, and now I've got some pictures to show. Of course I got a little ahead of myself and made a little website with a gallery for them. There's 3 new dolls in there, plus 3 older ones. More to come when I feel the uncontrolable need to start sowing again.

Intimidating. My first post. It's my second try at a creative blog, so let's hope I don't get bored with this one too soon, right? Here a little cartoon to start things off. More to come.
I'm currently working of some doll-designs. I started making some a couple of years back, just for fun, but I want to get more out of it. So far, I've got 2 basic models, a logo and nametags. Next up, packaging. Who knows, maybe I'll be selling them online next year. Pictures when I've got more to show, and when I'm less paranoid.
Also, I'm working on a story (possibly for a comic). Let's see how that progresses.
